The Idea for The Script
When I wrote 'The Script' in the title I was referring to the actual script of the video, or the plan. I didn't really realize I also made a pun on my work, because well, the name of the band is also 'The Script'.
Anyways, this took me THREE WEEKS to figure out.
My head is like a soldier, or a computer. Tell me to make something exact to make, which colors to use, everything, I'll do it quickly and effectively. Tell me to just make something beautiful?
Nope.
I'd argue that script writing can take up more time than the making of a product itself. But whatever, I'm finally done with this part.
To start with, reference.
The official Hall Of Fame music video tells the story of a young abused teenager, or maybe adult, who due to the abuse takes up boxing to learn to defend himself, and tries his best to improve. Side by side the story is told of a young, mute woman who wishes to become a professional dancer. Both of their stories are shown from beginning to end. Beginning being rough and full of difficulty and challenge, but training and working towards improving, and in the end, overcoming challenges and standing at the top.
Though I'm also doing boxing in my video as well, the one thing that I really want to emphasize on is the absolute final struggle. The last step, the most difficult one, just trying to muster enough will and enough strength to get up and finish the job, despite the difficulty. That final struggle, that final battle, has so much weight, so much pressure, so much hanging on such a loose thread. It's all or nothing.
I want to show that. In the original video they show the training and then a fight but the struggle of the finale isn't shown, just the victory. That's the main thing I'll be doing differently for the boxing section.
As for the dancer, I couldn't choose dancing as something to rise up in for a few reasons. One being I knew nobody who did it, another being that if I did choose it then my Cambridge Examiner would just think I had copied the original video. I needed to show something different, something to show that this video was my own.
This is the part that took so long to figure out. At first I thought I'll choose another sport, such as basketball or football or cricket, but the problem is that any other sport, or specifically, sport that involves physical fitness, would end up having similar footage to that of the boxing training, as they both involved physical workouts. This is why the original music video worked so well, dancing didn't involve physical workout, it was instead about practice and specific movements. It didn't feel repeated. There was also the fact that most other physical sports involve teams in some way shape or form, and that many actors would increase the work and cooperation factor, and make it far more difficult to work with. I'm not that good with people.
If not any physical sport, then maybe a skill just like dancing, something that has competitions where you can compete and win. But what? It mostly just is, sports. Things involving specific motions, I didn't really know anyone. Fencing? Barely even practiced here by anyone, if at all. Archery? Too difficult to film and manage, and again, didn't know anyone who would be an appropriate actor.
What about a game? Chess has competitions and people compete in it, and I'm decent at it so I could understand how to do it. But it would be rather boring....There is this one show that I want to watch called The Queen's Gambit, and it might give me some ideas for how to make this more entertaining, but not only did I not have time, but it would also be ripping off an idea.
The only way to make something like chess entertaining would be to make a whole exaggerated animation of it, like a 3d version of what happened in the first Harry Potter film. That....maybe that could work. I could show two pieces fighting, like in a cartoon or a film.
But how would I show training for it? It's still just a board game and there would be too much animation work involved if I want to make it entertaining. How would I show the improvement, and above all, the final struggle?
If instead of chess pieces it was characters with skills and-
....wait.
That's it. It makes sense. It took so long for me to work up to it, but, it just, clicked.
VIDEO GAMES.
Specifically eSports titles, games that have players compete in them. I can show actual gameplay footage and training, I can show struggles, and reserve the difficult animation for the final struggle. It makes sense! IT WORKS!
We're in business. Boxing, Video Games, and well since we have to promote the song, the video also has to have scenes where there's a singer. That doesn't seem too hard, just have him walk and lipsyncing would be enough. Locations there's plenty. Maybe......climbing a mountain. That would be metaphorical for rising to the top as well.
The script is ready. Or, well, the idea for it is. The actual full script where I write each scene and timings and things actors to do? That still remains to be seen.
Let's get to work.
