Location Scouting: School Gym Hall
We call it a Gym Hall but really it's just a huge basketball court that gets used for multiple sports because of how big the room really is. It's janky, a bit unclean, has a net attached to a chair that's used for volleyball, the basketball hoops don't have nets, there's an unbalanced table tennis table, and there's quite a few windows but only on one wall.
After the disappointing rejection from the Sports Complex I was considering my options and the time I had. Thus far, out of the five parts, which were: Lipsync, Boxer training, Boxer finale, Gamer training, Gamer finale, I had only filmed one, and it's already nearly a month. The Lipsync session is planned to be on the 18th of February, which is this coming Friday. So before that I need to make sure that I've finished the other parts.
The Gamer finale is just a 3D animation, I'll get to work on that at some point as well. The Gamer training would probably just be me at home filming myself. Don't know how that one's gonna go but we'll see. So really it's just the Finale and the Lipsync that's left. But I still haven't found a Boxing Ring, and my only remaining options are in a separate city altogether.
On my earlier post I uploaded a small preview of a man's scream: "I want the world to know my name." I had been thinking for quite a while how I would film that practically. It had to be some sport or event where you fail but can get back up. Then what sports can I actually film like that?
Let's see there's boxing of course....and I can't think of any others. Football requires a huge team so one person's fall then rise would just make it look like he's some kind of superhuman or it wouldn't work well. The only way it would, would be with a different song or different buildup, similar to how the most Beautiful game of football was made in the film Pele.
It was such a breathtaking moment that one.
Anyways, I just looked up sports that have some form of championships national or worldwide. Among the Wikipedia list, and the two that caught my eye, were Dodgeball, and Basketball, as both didn't involve a team with a large size, and in both cases I could film a main character falling, and slowly rising.
The problem with my progress was that only 1 of 5 parts of the video were done. But that also worked in my favor for changing the script for it. I asked another friend, Wahaj Kiani, if he was interested in being the main character for a Basketball themed script, and he agreed, though reluctantly.
The third reason why Dodgeball and Basketball made me think that they could be done practically, were that they could both be filmed in the school gym hall. The advantage of this would be that I could use school equipment to film for my project, meaning lights, DSLR's, and glidecams!
....yeeeeeahh no. Glidecams are too much of a hassle. Sure they give good results because you're stabilizing the DSLR but honestly, a proper electronic gimbal would be a godsend. And out of everything the school spent money on, this was one thing where they cut corners. That and the computers which they took away and replaced with older, weaker ones.
It really makes no sense to me how they spend their funding because on one hand they have imported Ubiquiti routers and DSLR's but on the other hand, students aren't allowed to use the wifi, we don't have any computers, and there's no stabilizers.
My Media Teacher fortunately has his own Mobile Gimbal that he uses and he let me borrow it for the filming that was gonna take place on Wednesday.
I also made sure to confirm as many people as I knew to come to the Hall on Wednesday, at 12:40pm, for basketball.
If all goes well, the finale and victory will be done, and then on Thursday or Friday I can film Wahaj's training in school as well or someplace else, and this Friday do the Lipsync, and my work will be complete! Excluding the things I have to do at home, at least.
