The Plan Part 5 of 6: Storyboards and reference
Previously I did the storyboarding in Blender, but it took too much time and wasn't even worth it because the shots didn't even look like that in the end, the reason being that I hadn't originally been to the location before. Or well I had but not in a long time. So this time I'll just draw things. I'm also going to apply a technique that's really, really dumb but just might work because this time I'm doing things solo.
And that's to just listen to the song a hundred times over and plan out the visuals all in my head, and as reminders just write everything in text, or do really low quality doodles. I've been doing the same thing for another project and thus far I haven't had any problems with it. Though that other project is a bit more special than this and has been in the works for years, even before I joined AS Level.
I'm really hoping I don't jinx myself and the future version of myself doesn't write in italics that I made a huge mistake.
Note from the future: I have no idea where to even begin with you thinking this was a good idea. This was a HUGE mistake.
The doodling wasn't the mistake, the mistake was you not doing enough of it.
As for reference, hooo boy where do I even begin.
League of Legends, a game made by Riot Games in 2009. It's quite the popular one, and it's rather competitive. I don't play it anymore because of how toxic it became, like nearly every matchup you have people telling you to kill yourself and on the regular you learn how to swear in like 15 different languages. But that's just the game itself. Everything else, the music, the characters, the story writing, and above all, the visuals of external projects. It is just unfair how well they produce things. A series called Arcane was released on Netflix too and I've yet to watch it but the trailer alone had me on edge the entire duration.
The point I'm trying to make is, if we ignore the game itself, Riot Games has made some masterpieces. And among them are the World Championship music videos that they release for generating hype for an event called 'Worlds'. Some prominent examples of these music videos are:
Rise, 2018. https://youtu.be/fB8TyLTD7EE
And my current favorite,
Take Over, 2020. https://youtu.be/KbNL9ZyB49c
I want to make something like that. I use Blender a lot, but not much for animation. I already know it won't be as good as that but it'll be a learning experience.
Beyond that, the Official Hall Of Fame music video on youtube as well.
One might wonder whether or not I just tried to mimic this video. I was inspired by it, so heavily that I wanted to make something for it. This song holds so much weight for me and I will try my damned hardest to use it to tell a story. And failing that, learn, so I can come back to what I've made in a few years time and think, you've come a long way kid.
